No one is identical to anyone else. We are all unique individuals with our own personal character, mannerisms, and biases. This has always caused problems because it has always been impossible for one of us to understand the motives of the other or for either of us to effectively communicate our intent. Individually we practice human relations and all the different aspects of it. Socially we have adopted a set of norms that most people are willing to abide by but not everyone so the more serious violations have been termed crimes for which punishments were debated and gradually instituted. Managing and enforcing the copious number of laws, rules, guidelines and suggestions became a full-time job and was turned over to our elected representatives with the resulting corrupting influences of power.
Each of us are special interests but when likeminded individuals find each other and cooperate to lobby for concessions and considerations or protested when our positions are not sufficiently accounted for, discriminatory laws are instituted.
Polarization of the populace and conflict between the various special interests has done nothing for society but eventually it results in its breakdown because there are no agreeable compromises all because no one can actually be trusted and there was no way to actually know whether or not a person was being honest, trustworthy, or loyal.
From the beginning of the first wood tool and with each advance in technology the potential was quickly realized but eventually the disparities were taken advantage of which in turn lead to newer technological solutions and even greater disparities. With each generation the sophistication and prowess of the new tools became greater but human nature never deviated. Countless tales of utopia were invented with each tool and with some reliance that man would evolve and aspire to this new order of human relations. With each utopia envisioned came the real dystopia as people acted the way they have always acted from the beginning trying to kill one another or at least gain the advantage. And yet there seems to be progress. Life is better than it use to be. So where is it all taking us? With each generation mankind stayed the same but technology adapted to those flaws and enabled us to counteract the laws of nature and the human condition with greater fidelity and individuality. With every advance the individual realized a greater degree of liberty and freedom. Even though the character of the few to try and limit the agency of the many is an enduring trait of the evil inclined the competing desire to be free and associate with like-minded people has compelled both ends of the extreme while fostering innovations and heroism.
With the advent of the computer it became possible to usurp the brain’s inability to contemplate more than just a few things. With the advent of higher level programming and faster processors coming in multiple configurations attached to the internet the computer usurps the brains innate bias and applies a customized and personalized rationale to the mind boggling amounts of data and real time information making it possible for the lone individual to surf the web and quarry the electronic media fog and interact spontaneously seeking and finding that emotional or cognitive stimuli that is desired. Human nature stays the same so the interesting, the mundane, and especially the perverse are rapidly assimilated into the culture while the political ramifications lag behind but are persistent in trying to regulate a dysfunctional civilization injecting greater disparities than would organically occur.
Equal to the computerization of the world is the scientific discovery that it enables. The desire to know everything, live forever, and profit from it compels the best and brightest to inventions and discoveries that exceeds the recent past by double.
As a consequence the physiological and cognitive frontiers are being delved into with such gusto and outcome that effecting the nature, bias, and character of man is now a realistic expectation. Not that it can be changed because it cannot but they can be accommodated, affected because it will be better understood, and accounted for which enables the individual to realize what was never realizable and that is the intent and bias of someone else. As the scientific, medical, and computer science fields collaborate new discoveries and inventions will enable me to interact with another person and know beyond a shadow of a doubt what that person’s value is to relative me. We will be able to read pertinent information, see visual clues and gain insight on how we relate to each other on ideas, experiences, emotions, ideologies, and expectations. As soon as we can do that then our world becomes a different place. Not one where I change it to suit my tastes and behaviors but one where I am aware of my place and time, where I am aware of my opportunity’s or dangers, and one where no one has really changed their character or nature but where I can freely associate or disassociate myself with them. Where I can open myself up to them or know or be informed that my values are not shared and I must be cautious and weary of any interaction.
The subway traveled across town and it was the best way to get to Margret’s house. I have know her since last year and I like being around her. We met in a contemporary writing class and realized very quickly that we shared a lot of things. Not only were we the same religion but we both liked writing, didn’t much care for pets, hadn’t done very much traveling and in general were both satisfied with being who we are and didn’t spend a great deal of time worrying about it.
As the doors of the car opened I glanced up to see who was getting on and immediately jumped to the conclusion that the hoodlums getting on were not going to be good news. It seemed out of context. Their black hoodies hid their faces. Their baggy pants and untied shoes drug and shuffled along the floor as they crowed and jostled one another into the car. There must have been a dozen of them. I wasn’t sure if there were any girls in the group accept for the black painted fingernails here and there. I quickly look toward my glasses projector and could see that the kids that had just gotten on were all valued at a score in the 90% category. My proximity app showed that even if they didn’t appear to be good kids they were. Over hearing some of their conversations I realized that they were heading to some costume party.
As I looked closer, the tell-tail features of mood rings and physo-pendants could be seen. Under closer examination there were only a few that didn’t glow bright green indicating that they were all happily engaged in what they were doing.
Hardly paying any attention to me they just as quickly bounced off of each other during their escape from the subway car at the very next stop.
I hadn’t noticed the two men get on, in the commotion of the costume partygoers, but my proximity app was aware and in my ear there was a quiet alert sounding. I looked at my glasses projector and could see an alert message. Apparently those two guys were not wearing any of the physo-monitors and were not registering on the proximity app accept for their physical presence. My awareness heightened. I tried casually looking in their direction to see them knowing that they were just as aware of me because I did have my glasses on and a mood ring, which was changing colors from white to a tinge of yellow. So they knew that I knew of their lack of status.
It is not mandatory that the physo’s be worn or that your proximity app broadcasts your status to those around you but if you didn’t then you naturally became an issue of interest and possibly concern for those of us who did. I took some solace that I had my mace sprayer in my pocket and momentarily rehearsed in my mind the steps of self-defense I had just practiced last week. I also knew that these guy had not traversed the city without being registered by the public safety system and that their presence in the car was apparent to the authorities but until you prove otherwise you are considered innocent. At the next stop a policeman would be available to intercede if necessary but until then that leaves a window of opportunity for a bad guy to disregard the public safety measures and make a choice to assault someone or try to break something. The likelihood of getting caught after the fact was so great that only the most foolish or emotionally distraught person would even think about acting out. It could happen so my awareness of the situation and diligence in my preparation’s allowed me to be as calm as possible in this unknowable circumstance.
They apparently were not going to cause any murder or mayhem at the moment so I looked back into the projector. My eye movements re-positioned the cursor at the eBook tab and a blink dropped the menu down. The list scrolled as my focus reached the bottom of the menu. Stopping my gaze at the title of the book I wanted to read, it opened with a blink to my last stopping point.
No sooner had I started to read than a movement caught my attention. “Oh great” I thought why is that guy walking toward me. I looked up into his eyes and smiled. His smile was reassuring and when he extended his hand out my focus went from his face to his hand then back to his eyes. I didn’t see anything sinister so I refocused on his extended hand and hesitantly reached out to grasp it. “Let me introduce myself” he said.
