“Jack” Shelia said “are you going to Annapolis tomorrow”? “Yes” Jack said “I have been asked to go see if I can help them get their manufacturing problems figured out”. “When are you leaving” Shelia asked. “6:30” Jack responded. “Are you worried about going to that place” Shelia whispered. “Yes” Jack said “but there are safe guards at the factory and I will be traveling with Frank”… “So there won’t be much of a chance that I will end up in the wrong place at the wrong time”
“How is it possible with the GM that a place like that can even exist”? Shelia questioned. “Remember” Jack Said “We are not compelled to be the way we are”… “We chose to be here and behave accordingly.” “The people who live and work in Annapolis are reasonably content with their lives”… “Even if that means they are at risk of having something stolen or being around obnoxious people who have had too much to drink. Shelia asked “but why, why would anyone want to feel unsafe when they walk at night or worry that their place may be broken into while they are gone”? Jack replied. “I don’t really know”… “there are all kinds of people in this world and enough of them find Annapolis to their liking that it persists in spite of the bad things that happen there. “I suppose that being able to drink, smoke, party, or do whatever you want is appealing to some people. While attending a game or a movie has its attractions” Jack said. “The tailgate parties, picnics, and nightclubs are not quite the same here at they are in Annapolis, or Saint Louis, Cheyenne, or Portland” “As much as we like our lives not everyone wants the same thing”.
“I guess you are right” Shelia said. “It does appear like they are having fun, but we both know that looks are deceiving” “The other issue” Jack said “is what happens when the cameras are not recording their lives the next day”… “That is what makes Annapolis a little scary to visit” “Try as the police do and even with a technology to monitor the psychological and physical actions of everyone not everyone wants to live under those conditions” … “They are willing to live under the threat of violence than put up with the scrutiny”
“So how did this happen” Shelia asked? “How did what happen” Jack replied. “How did the separate places happen” Shelia continue. “You mean, how did we end up living in Ralston, where the threat of violence and the danger of theft and other crimes are not really a possibility?” Jacked queried. “Well yes” Shelia replied, knowing that Jack was being exasperating and obtuse as he would sometimes be. “As you know” said Jack. “Personal monitoring is voluntary”… “You wear a necklace and a ring that I can see and know how you are reacting” … “I wear a ring and badge that you can see”. “We both wears contacts that display pertinent information about our circumstances and situations” “Our value to the community is visible to us and to each other any time we want to see it” Jack said. “Because there are enough people like us who want to live in a community where we are safer and more informed, We have all migrated to Ralston”… “and we stay here because we don’t mind the fact that everyone knows everything about us”… “Those who can’t stand the scrutiny leave for places like Williamsburg” Shelia interrupted. “Is that why Joe and June left?” “Yes, I think so” said Jack. “But it is also why Elizabeth and Ralph came back.” Jack said, “I talked with Ralph yesterday and he said that they were amazed at how uncomfortable it seems to be around other people and not know for sure whether they were being true to the values of the community, but then they realized that the values of the community were not the same as they were here.”… “Not that Williamsburg isn’t a friendly and comfortable place to live and work but there was a noticeable tension when they spoke to people not knowing what their reactions were to them or whether or not they could be trusted.
